Rahu and Ketu — the shadow planets of Vedic astrology — hold a unique and often misunderstood role in the birth chart. They do not have physical bodies like the other seven planets, but their influence on a person's karma, desires, fears, and life direction is among the most powerful in the entire system.
Rahu amplifies desire, creates obsession, and represents the direction the soul is moving toward in this life. Ketu represents what has been mastered in previous lives — it brings detachment, spiritual insight, and sometimes loss. When either planet is afflicted or poorly placed, the results can include sudden reversals, obsessive patterns, mysterious health problems, and a persistent sense of dissatisfaction despite external success.
When is a Rahu Ketu Puja Recommended?
- Kalsarpa dosha is present in the birth chart
- Rahu or Ketu Mahadasha or Antardasha is running, especially with a problematic natal placement
- Eclipses fall directly on sensitive points in your natal chart (particularly the ascendant, Moon, or Sun)
- Persistent unexplained problems in relationships, finances, or health that do not respond to other remedies
- Dreams of snakes, water, or ancestral figures that recur over a long period
The Puja Procedure
The Rahu Ketu puja performed by Pandit Shastri includes invocation of the Nava Grahas with special emphasis on Rahu and Ketu, the specific Sarpa Suktam recitation, offering of appropriate materials (urad dal, black sesame, durva grass), and a concluding homa with ghee and specific herbs. The timing is aligned with auspicious lunar days and planetary positions for maximum effectiveness.
For those who cannot attend in person, the puja is performed with your name and nakshatra, and photographs of the completed ritual are shared. A recording of the key mantras is also provided.
