Choosing a name for a newborn is one of the first and most lasting gifts a family gives a child. In the Telugu tradition, the Namakaranam ceremony formalises this moment — and the name chosen on that day is believed to carry the child's vibration through life. Pandit Ravishankar Shastri helps families select a name that aligns with the child's birth nakshatra, rasi, and numerological profile.
The process begins with the child's birth details — date, time, and place. From these, the birth nakshatra and rasi are determined. Each nakshatra has specific starting syllables (aksharas) associated with it, and the name should begin with one of these syllables to maintain harmonic alignment with the child's planetary influences.
The Nakshatra-Based Naming System
There are 27 nakshatras, each associated with specific syllables. For example, a child born under Ashwini nakshatra may have a name starting with Chu, Che, Cho, or La. Pandit Shastri provides the correct syllables for the child's nakshatra and then suggests three to five specific names that combine the nakshatra alignment with a favourable numerological value.
Numerological Cross-Check
Once the starting syllable is confirmed, the full name is evaluated numerologically. The sum of the letters in the name should produce a number that is compatible with the child's birth number (based on date of birth). This double alignment — nakshatra compatibility and numerological harmony — gives the name strong positive resonance for the child's future.
The Namakaranam Ceremony
Beyond just selecting a name, Pandit Shastri advises on the auspicious muhurta (timing) for the Namakaranam ceremony itself, the appropriate mantras to recite when revealing the name, and the traditional elements of the ceremony that vary slightly between different Telugu family customs.
